Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: Ryan Bingham: Western Shore.

During Ryan’s recent trip to the Big Apple he also visited the WNYC studio for an in person interview and three song live acoustic performance as part of WNYC’s “Soundcheck” series.

When Ryan Bingham visited Soundcheck in 2010, he had just won a Golden Globe for “The Weary Kind,” a song co-written with producer T. Bone Burnett for the film Crazy Heart, which starred Jeff Bridges as a country music burnout. Bingham would go on to win an Oscar and a Grammy for the song.

A career path into Nashville’s mainstream seemed possible, yet, on his follow-up record, Bingham is showing an independent streak.

Tomorrowland — which Bingham is releasing himself on a label co-founded with his wife — is filled with searing, Zeppelin-style guitar riffs, Bingham’s ragged, tougher-than-nails voice, and some pointed commentary about economic hardship in America. As Bingham tells Soundcheck host John Schaefer, the music of Woody Guthrie and Ghost of Tom Joad-era Springsteen inspired the collection.

In an intimate solo performance, this well-traveled road warrior performs in the Soundcheck studio.
