Putin Flushes the US Dollar: Russia’s Gold Ruble Payments System Delinked from Dollar?

By Umberto Pascali
Global Research, March 30, 2014

Region: Russia and FSU
Theme: Global Economy

A New Financial System independent from Wall Street and City of London begins to take shape concretely in Russia?

dollarbill-400x167ZRussia “forced” by the sanctions to create a currency system which is independent from the US dollar.

Russia announces that it will sell (and buy) products and commodities – including oil – in rubles rather than in dollars. The move is towards the development of bilateral.

Putin has been preparing this move — the creation of a payment system in rubles completely independent and protected from the Dollar and the “killer speculations” (e.g. short-selling) of the big Western financial institutions — for a long time.

After sanctioning several Russian banks to punish Russia for Crimea, the Washington politicians were told by the financial power-to-be to step back because obviously, the Wall Street vampires understand that putting Russian banks outside the reach of their blood sucking teeth is never a good idea.

For Wall Street and the city’s financial services, countries like Russia should always have an open financial door through which their real economy can be periodically looted. So Washington announced that it was a mistake to enforce sanctions on all Russian banks; only one, the Rossiya bank shall be hit by sanctions, just for propaganda reasons and to make an example out of it.

It is what Putin needed. Since at least 2007, he was trying to launch an independent Ruble System, a financial system that would be based on Russia’s real economy and resources and guaranteed by its gold reserves. No tolerance for looting and financial speculation: A peaceful move, but at the same time a declaration of independence that Wall Street will consider as a “declaration of war”.

According to the Judo strategy, the sanction attack created the ideal situation for a “defensive” move that would redirect the brute force of the adversary against him. And now it’s happening. Bank Rossiya will be the first Russian bank to use exclusively the Russian ruble.

The move has not been done in secret. On the contrary. A huge golden ruble symbol will be set up in front of bank Rossiya headquarters in Perevedensky Pereulok in Moscow “to symbolize the ruble’s stability and its backing by the country’s gold reserves,” the official agency Itar-Tass explains quoting the bank officials.

In fact, the officials are very clear on their intention to punish the western speculators that have been looting their country for a long time:

“Russia, at its present stage of development, should not be dependent on foreign currencies; its internal resources will make its own economy invulnerable to political wheeler dealers.”

This is only the first step, declared Andrei Kostin, the president of VTB, another bank previously sanctioned:

“We have been moving towards wider use of the Russian rouble as the currency of settlement for a long time. The ruble became fully convertible quite a long time ago. Unfortunately, we have seen predominantly negative consequences of this step so far revealed in the outflow of capital from this country. The influx of foreign investments into Russia has been speculative and considerably destabilizing to our stock markets.”

According to Itar-Tass, Kostin was very precise and concrete:

“Russia should sell domestic products – from weapons to gas and oil – abroad for roubles and buy foreign goods also for rubles….Only then are we going to use the advantages of the rouble being a foreign currency in full measure.”

Putin himself lobbied for the new siystem in meetings with members of the Upper House of the Duma, the parliament, on March 28, overcoming the last doubts and indecisions: “

“Why do we not do this? This definitely should be done, we need to protect our interests, and we will do it. These systems work, and work very successfully in such countries as Japan and China. They originally started as exclusively national [systems] confined to their own market and territory and their own population, but have gradually become more and more popular…”

Fascists/neo-nazis Will Never Allow Real Elections In Ukraine: “C’mon Baby, Light My (Crimean) Fire”

Post Categories: Canada

Pepe Escobar

The Fourth Media

March 16 is C Day. The Crimean parliament – by 78 votes with 8 abstentions – decided this is the day when Crimean voters will choose between joining the Russian Federation or to remain part of Ukraine as an autonomous region with very strong powers, according to the 1992 constitution.

Whatever “diplomatic” tantrums Washington and Brussels will keep pulling, and they will be incandescent, facts on the ground speak for themselves. The city council of Sevastopol – the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet – has already voted to join Russia. And next week the Duma in Moscow will study a bill to simplify the mechanism of adhesion.

Quick recap: this is a direct result of Washington spending US$5 billion – a Victoria “F**k the EU” Nuland official figure – to promote regime change in Ukraine. On the horizon, Crimea may be incorporated into Russia for free, while the “West” absorbs that bankrupt back-of-beyond (Western Ukraine) that an Asia Times Online reader indelibly described as the “Khaganate of Nulands” (an amalgam of khanate, Victoria’s notorious neo-con husband Robert Kagan, and no man’s land).

What Moscow regards as an illegal, neo-nazi infiltrated government in Kiev, led by Prime Minister Arseniy “Yats” Yatsenyuk – an Ukrainian Jewish banker playing the role of Western puppet – insists Crimea must remain part of Ukraine. And it’s not only Moscow; half of Ukraine itself does not recognize the Yats gang as a legitimate government, now boasting a number of oligarchs imposed as provincial governors.

Yet this “government” – supported by the US and the European Union – has already declared the referendum illegal. Proving its impeccable “democratic” credentials, it has already moved to ban the official use of the Russian language in Ukraine; get rid of the communist party, which amassed 13% of the votes in the last election, more, incidentally, than the neo-nazi-infested Svoboda (“Freedom”) party, now ensconced in key government security posts; and ban a Russian TV station, which happens to be the most popular on Ukrainian cable.

Amid all the hysteria from Washington and certain European capitals, what’s not explained to puzzled public opinion is that these fascists/neo-nazis who got to power through a coup will never allow real elections to take place in Ukraine; after all they would most certainly be sent packing.

This implies that “Yats” and his gang – on top of it reveling at their red carpet welcome at a pompous yet innocuous EU summit in Brussels – won’t budge. For instance, they used heavy muscle to send pro-Russian protesters in front of the Donetsk government building running. Heavily industrialized Donetsk is very much linked commercially to Russia.

Then there’s an even more sinister possible scenario looming in the horizon; an instrumentalization of the lunatic jihadi fringe of the 10% of Tatars in Crimea, from false flags to suicide bombings. The House of Saud, according to a solid Saudi source, is immensely interested in Ukraine, and may be tempted to do a few favors for Western intelligence.

Ukraine to be ruled by neo-fascists

Ukraine to be ruled by neo-fascists

Will our love become a funeral pyre?

Arguably, for Moscow, keeping Crimea inside the Ukraine, with large autonomous powers plus the current signed agreement to keep the base in Sevastopol, is a much better deal than annexing it. It’s as if Russia was annexing what for all practical purposes was already a Russian province.

Yet the Kremlin may always decide not to annex, and use the all but certain result of the referendum as a key pawn in a complex negotiation with, not the EU, but fundamentally Germany. The EU is a mess. The “government” in Kiev is a mess. What matters is what Vladimir Putin is discussing over the phone with Angela Merkel.

Much has to do with Pipelineistan – as in the 9 billion euro (US$12.4 billion) Nord Stream, the steel umbilical cord between Russia and Germany via the Baltic Sea. Merkel, the then Russian president Dmitri Medvedev, and former German chancellor and now Nord Stream chairman Gerhard Schroeder were very close when the pipeline project carrying Russian gas to Germany went online in 2011. The project was initially proposed in 2005 when Schroeder was chancellor and Putin was Russia’s president, first time round. Schroeder, earlier this week, said that NATO should shut up.

Moreover, two-way trade between Russia and the EU was around a whopping US$370 billion in 2012 (no 2013 data yet), with Russia exporting mostly oil, gas and cereals, and the EU exporting mostly cars, medicine, machine parts. Forget about sanctions, that sacrosanct Washington mantra; they are really bad for business.

Moscow, though, has a real, tangible and very serious red line. It does not even have to bother about Ukraine in the EU because the overwhelming majority of Europeans don’t want it as part of their club. The red line is North Atlantic Treaty Organization bases in Ukraine. Moscow might even compromise on Ukraine remaining a sort of Finland between Russia and Europe. With Crimea still inside the Ukraine, a NATO base side by side with the Russian base in Sevastopol would be nothing short of psychedelic.

So a resolution in Crimea – whichever way it goes – does send a very clear message from Moscow to the “West”. Watch our red line. And unlike others, we mean it, and we back it up with all we got.

No time to wallow in the mire

First US President Barack Obama solemnly declared that the referendum in Crimea would “violate international law” (Kosovo, though, could merrily secede from Serbia in 2008, to wild Washington fanfare.)

And this after he declared Crimea to be an “extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the US”. What next – Crimean nationalists invading Iowa? No, just a ploy for the White House to deploy the usual financial war.

All that when the brilliant “strategy” of Team Obama – keep demonizing Putin to Kingdom Come – was reaching its apex.

But then Obama – noticing Angela Merkel was stealing the spotlight – called Putin and stayed on the phone for nearly a full hour trying to “engage” him. Why the change of heart?

A possible response may be supplied by the inescapable Dr Zbigniew “The Grand Chessboard” Brzezinski, former national security advisor to that Hamlet hick Jimmy Carter; the man who gave the Soviets “their Vietnam”; the man who always dreamed that the US should rule over Eurasia; and Obama’s “invisible” top foreign policy mentor.

As Dr Zbig told WorldPost’s Nathan Gardels, “The strategy of the West at this moment should be to complicate Vladimir Putin’s planning.” Well, that didn’t work so well, did it? Then Dr Zbig advances that “NATO should invite the Russians to participate in its ongoing discussions”. It’s not happening.

Dr Zbig is adamant “we have to formally recognize the new government in Ukraine, which I believe expresses the will of the people there”. In fact, the will of perhaps half of the nation, at best. “Interference in Ukrainian affairs should be considered a hostile act by a foreign power.” That was Obama’s rationale until his phone call to Putin.

Dr Zbig got even more apocalyptic, stressing, “We should put NATO contingency plans into operation, deploying forces in Central Europe so we are in a position to respond if war should break out and spread.” No wonder US corporate media went bananas.

But then Dr Zbig falls back into sanity; “The best solution for Ukraine would be to become as Finland has been to Russia.” So in the end he may have suggested to Obama “a compromise solution that is acceptable for Russia as well as the West”. And that will involve “serious economic aid and investment”. And guess who should take the lead, as in footing the bill? “Germany, the most prosperous and strongest economy in the EU.”

So in the end we fall back, once again, on what Angela and Vlad have been discussing. Is it Finlandization? Or is it about who’s trying to set the night on fire?

Wikileak Cables: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Washington’s Pocket Since 2006

Poroshenko-Wikileaks-US-State-Department

Published by SGGNEWS – 18.June.2014

It turns out that Ukraine’s new president, Petro Poroshenko, has been working for the U.S. government since at least 2006 and they knew he was corrupt.

There’s not much point in staging a coup if you don’t influence who is placed in power in the aftermath. Of course in order for a puppet government to be effective, they can’t be perceived as such. You wouldn’t want the natives to get restless would you?

The evidence that the U.S. was behind the toppling of the Ukrainian government early this year is so overwhelming at this point that the subject really isn’t up for debate, however initially it was unclear how the election of Petro Poroshenko fit in. The ecstatic response by Washington when he was declared the winner, and their unbending support in spite of his ongoing military assault against civilians in the east, made it clear that he was the chosen one, but the paper trail wasn’t immediately obvious.

As it turns out, the evidence that Poroshenko is in the pocket of the U.S. State Department has been available all this time, you just had to know where to find it. In a classified diplomatic cable from 2006 released by Wikileaks.org, U.S. officials refer to Poroshenko as “Our Ukraine (OU) insider Petro Poroshenko”.

A separate cable also released by Wikileaks makes it clear that the U.S. government was considered Poroshenko corrupt.
“Poroshenko was tainted by credible corruption allegations, but wielded significant influence within OU; Poroshenko’s price had to be paid.”

The U.S. government knew Poroshenko was dirty, but he was influential, and arguably their most dependable mole.

Perhaps the most interesting revelation comes from a 2009 cable where Poroshenko told then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton he supported “the opening of a U.S. diplomatic presence in Crimea” and “He emphasized the importance of Crimea, and said that having U.S. representation there would be useful for Ukraine.” Poroshenko’s role as an informant for the U.S. government continued in cables in 2010 as well.

Reading through the cables, I have to wonder if Poroshenko was actually breaking Ukrainian law by sharing the kind of strategic information that he did. Considering that this information was certainly used when planning the coup against Yanukovich, one could argue that he committed treason.

Poroshenko, however, isn’t the only Ukrainian politician mentioned. For example, the cables mention the scandal surrounding Oleksandr Turchynov’s destruction of SBU documents tying Julia Tymoshenko to organized crime, and note that the accusation that Tymoshenko wanted Turchynov get the Interior Minister position so that she could gather damaging information on her enemies. The cable refers to this accusation as “not farfetched”. Turchynov went on to be installed as the acting president of Ukraine in the provisional government.

In order to grasp the extent of the U.S. government’s tinkering in Ukraine it is worth reading the documents for yourself.

It’s all About Russia and Putin Again…

by Nick Hubble / on July 22, 2014 at 4:51 pm

in Global Economy

flag_660Today, it’s all about Russia and Putin again. The Western press is full of condemnation and puffery from pollies around the Western world. Which seems a little odd to us. Who created the mess in Ukraine again? Was it Russia that supported the take down of the government in the Ukraine? Not to mention Syria, Iraq, Libya…

For some reason, it remains a surprise that supporting instability in a country leads to instability. But to blame that instability on someone else is a matter, of course, for the US and those pandering to its will. One journalist in today’s Australian Financial Review even called the mess in Ukraine ‘Russia’s quasi-war’.

Let’s rewind history a little and begin the story a few months before today’s papers do.

The EU and US went ahead and backed a revolution in Ukraine. Well, actually the Americans largely decided to go it alone after one of their diplomats was caught saying ‘F*** the EU’. Nationalists took over in Kiev. Russia fought back by supporting its own nationalists in the eastern part of the country.

Since then, the US and EU supported government has killed 250 people in the breakaway region, including 20 in a bombing raid the day after the crash of the Malaysia Airlines flight, according to an article by former US politician Ron Paul. Most were civilians, but the US and EU support the effort. A US government spokesperson even called the attacks ‘measured’!

The evidence for Russia’s involvement in the attack comes from YouTube videos. Well, the politicians just skip past mentioning any evidence. But that’s the only supporting information anyone can find to back up the accusations of Barack Obama and his cronies. YouTube videos of rocket launchers, black boxes found by separatists and the appalling state of the crash site.

As with the chemical weapons attacks in Syria and the WMDs in Iraq, one by one, this evidence is discredited. Of course, relying on YouTube, which Edward Snowden showed is probably manipulated by Western governments, is pathetic in the first place.

So far the video of the rocket launcher supposedly used to shoot down the flight turned out to be outdated…and it was in the wrong place too. Not to mention that the Ukraine owns their own set of the same missiles, which were being moved around according to Russian intelligence images, despite the fact that the Russian separatists have no aircraft to shoot down. The black boxes that Russian separatists are supposedly delivering to Moscow, according to Western media, are also being delivered to Malaysia at the same time according to the Malaysian PM.

And now Russia is coming up with counter evidence. It calls into question a bundle of assumptions made by the West and adds a decent list of alternative possibilities for what happened. It’s probably just as dodgy, but at least Russia isn’t relying on social media to make its case.

Oh wait, it is. A mystery Spanish air traffic controller working in Ukraine supposedly tweeted that Ukrainian jets shot down the flight after the Ukrainian military took over the air traffic control system. Pepe Escobar has an amusing summary here.

Having been in Spain recently, it wouldn’t surprise us if the Spanish air traffic controller was entirely to blame for the whole thing. He seems to have disappeared since.

Only the Chinese seem to be keeping a clear head. Their media are pointing out what Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Ms Marple would. In the end, Russia and its supporters have nothing to gain from attacking civilians. Russia and Putin were winning the propaganda war over Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and America’s other messes until recently. Many political commentators were lambasted in the Western media for pointing this out before the plane was shot down.

The Ukrainians and the West have a lot to gain from an attack. Well, the politicians do. Nobody outside the political sphere does.

But still, it’s all Putin’s fault if you ask the Western politicians and their media. So he needs to secure the area for an investigation. So says a new UN Security Council resolution put forward by Australia.

–Now, first of all, asking Russia to secure the evidence of its own alleged crime seems rather stupid. But more importantly, the crash site is in, you guessed it, Ukraine. As Russia’s Ambassador calls it, the ‘sovereign territory of another state’.

If we were Putin, we’d agree to the UN resolution to secure the crash site in the Ukraine… by suggesting a few Russian tank divisions could do so quite nicely.

Anyway, your media and politicians are feeding you utter tripe. And, just like in Syria, it will be discredited behind closed doors and then disappear.

But why? Why is the world condemning Putin without evidence? Surely premature antagonism will prevent the truth.

What’s really at work here is a trend we predicted more than three and a half years ago in our speech at the After America conference. Politicians don’t actually care about the shot down plane. Well, they care about the opportunity to promote their career far more. They want to be on page one no matter what the topic.

So today’s message is simple: Get used to it. Geopolitical tensions will overrule economics in coming years. As China’s star journalists explained in a Global Times article, ‘Those unwilling to work with Western interests will often find themselves in a tough position.’

This leaves Australia with large economic imbalances, such as a housing bubble, but on the right side of geopolitics. We’re an economic province of China and a geopolitical province of America. Only one editor in the office has come out with a definitive call on how the two clashing forces will play out for Australia.

Of course, the typical Aussie punter couldn’t care less about geopolitics. Overseas, politics can be a matter of life, death and prosperity. Here in Australia very different matters are at hand in the political sphere. For example, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman decided to reverse a key policy after losing a by-election. He will no longer legislate for imprisoned bikies to wear pink.

That policy might just work on those Russian separatists though.
