Pro-Russian activists say nearly 90 percent of voters in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk have voted in favor of independence from the central government in Kiev.
The head of the electoral commission in Donetsk says only 10 percent of people in the region voted against the bid. On Sunday, residents in the two eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk took part in a referendum on the future status of their provinces. Regional officials in Luhansk province also say polls have closed there, and a vote count is now underway. The interim authorities in Kiev have rejected the ballot as illegal and a criminal farce organized by Russia. Meanwhile, at least one pro-Russian activist has lost his life in clashes with army forces in the city of Krasno-armeysk. Earlier, government forces took control of two state buildings there.
