Pearl Jam – North American Tour This Fall

Ahhhh... when we were young...

Ahhhh… when we were young…

Not many bands could have survived the crushing success that Pearl Jam had on their debut album, Ten. The 1991 disc catapulted them from an unknown Seattle grunge outfit to MTV and radio gods, selling millions of records along the way and turning Eddie Vedder into an icon of his generation. Living up to that initial burst of success would have been impossible, so the band didn’t even try. They stopped making videos, refused to tour with Ticketmaster, shied away from the media and did everything they could to scale back. They focused all their efforts instead on making great rock records and building one of the most devoted cult audiences in rock – and keeping their fans satisfied with marathon concerts whose set lists varied wildly from night to night. Pearl Jam might not ever land another “Jeremy” on the charts, but more than two decades after Ten, they can still instantly sell out any arena in the country.

Pearl Jam have announced a North American tour that will begin this fall, after a mysterious countdown clock was posted last week on the band’s website.

The first leg of the 24-date tour will kick off on October 11th in Pittsburgh and wrap with the band’s headlining performance at the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in New Orleans the weekend of November 1st. The second leg will begin on November 15th in Dallas and close in the band’s hometown of Seattle on December 6th. Tickets will go on sale on July 27th.

Tame Impala on festivalgoers: ‘A fucking hoard of Tarzans scoping out chicks’

Kevin Parker says at some festivals, only 10 per cent of people pay attention to the music.  Speaking after their set at Bonnaroo festival (June 16), Parker told Rolling Stone that crowds at festivals have changed in recent years.

“It was a bit more wholesome back then,” he said of watching Kings of Leon in 2006 at Australia’s Big Day Out. “Back then, it was more about the music. Now, not so much. Now it’s more about muscles and how little clothing you can wear. I guess it’s the cool thing now to go to a festival. I’ve played festivals in Australia. If it’s a dance music festival or mainstream festival, there’s maybe like 10 per cent who pay attention to the music. You just see guys with muscles – essentially Tarzan. A fucking hoard of Tarzans that are like, ‘I just want to scope out all the chicks!'”

Speaking recently about when the band might follow-up their second album ‘Lonerism’, which was named  Album of 2012 by NME, Parker said that the prospect of making another record “doesn’t excite” him. Meanwhile, it was recently announced that bassist Nick Allbrook has left Tame Impala and has been replaced by his Pond bandmate Cam Avery.

The Pond frontman, seen recently singing feathery backing vocals on Tame Impala’s cover of OutKast’s “Prototype,” will continue with his other music projects. Cam Avery, also of Pond, will replace Allbrook on bass for his prior group, the Australian space rockers’ behind last year’s SPIN Essential album Lonerism.

Allbrook’s last show with Tame Impala came on Saturday night at Belvoir Amphiteatre in Perth, Australia, according to a post on the band’s website. The band wrote that Allbrook “is hopping off the Tame Impala band wagon so that he can try and screw his head back on, and make an attempt to assimilate back into society. A task the rest of us fear we will one day have to perform….”

The talented Allbrook isn’t fully rejoining civilian life, though. “All bands and projects and stuff will keep going, it’s just hard to keep them all going if you’re touring all the time,” he told NME. “The only bad part will be not seeing my mates every day. I love them more than anything.”

Tame Impala still have a number of festival and tour dates coming up, including a handful in North America. They will be performing in two shows at Terminal 5 in NYC in October.
