Mark Knopfler Cancels Shows in Russia

Mark Knopfler canceled two concerts in Russia on Thursday to protest what he sees as the government’s harassment of human rights groups there, the BBC reported.

Mr. Knopfler, the former Dire Straits frontman, said he was calling off his performances planned for June in Moscow and St. Petersburg because Russian authorities had searched the offices of several organizations, among them Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. He called the searches a “crackdown.”

“I hope the current climate will change soon,” he wrote on his Web site. He added, “I have always loved playing in Russia and have great affection for the country and the people.”

Human rights groups and other non-governmental organizations have complained recently about unwarranted searches by prosecutors, the justice ministry and tax officials. But Russian officials say the searches are routine and legal. Pavel Chikov, a member of the country’s presidential Human Rights Council, said about 2,000 organizations have been inspected and searched in the last month.

Mark Knopfler – Privateering
Release date: September 03, 2012

‘PRIVATEERING’, Mark Knopfler’s latest album, his seventh solo recording, will be released on September 3rd.

The Mark Knopfler soundtracks ‘Local Hero’, ‘Cal’, ‘Last Exit to Brooklyn’ and ‘The Princess Bride’ will be released as SHM-CD by Universal Music Japan on September 26, 2012. The re-issue features 96kHz/24bit remastering using the analogue masters from the Japanese editions LP.

The ‘Cal’ re-issue comes with a bonus – three original tracks from the ‘Comfort and Joy’ soundtrack previously never released on CD.

Twenty new songs were recorded at the artist’s British Grove Studios in London with the following players: Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano) Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle) and Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), Glenn Worf (bass) and Ian Thomas (drums).

In addition to what has become Mark’s long-time house band, hand-picked guest aces include Kim Wilson (harmonica) of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tim O’Brien (mandolin) singer Ruth Moody of The Wailin’ Jennys, Paul Franklin (pedal steel) and Scotland’s Phil Cunningham (accordion).

Produced by Mark and assisted by co-producers Chuck Ainlay and Guy Fletcher, this is the artist’s first double album of originals. The songs cover a wide variety of subjects seen through the eyes of many characters, evoking locations on both sides of the Atlantic and moving through a number of genres, including several blues originals. ‘PRIVATEERING’ is a soulful and heartfelt collection, each song masterfully performed by a group of outstanding players.
