Summary The product of an unlikely pairing of musicians, Sylvan Esso works in equally unlikely ways: Singer Amelia Meath first surfaced as a singer in the largely a cappella Vermont folk group Mountain Man , while Nick Sanborn plays bass in the versatile North Carolina psych-rock band Megafaun . The two met, however, when each was in solo mode, Meath as a singer and Sanborn as a producer of heady electronic music — and that’s where Sylvan Esso combines, highlights and ultimately maximizes their talents, in ways that ought to make them both stars.

“It’s the dreamiest of scenes,” Sylvan Esso singer Amelia Meath sighed as she looked out over the sold-out crowd at Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club. Wearing six-inch platform tennis shoes and an all-black jumpsuit, Meath gyrated and pumped her fists, urging the crowd on. Meanwhile, the other half of Sylvan Esso, Nick Sanborn, tweaked the knobs on a small control panel plugged into a laptop.

Our main man Adam Schatz (of Landlady) did a beautiful horn arrangement of HEY MAMI, which we performed on a rooftop in New York a few months back. Now we our pleased share with you all the studio version of the remix via BuzzFeed, Enjoy!

The Durham, North Carolina-based electronica duo was started by two folk artists, singer Amelia Randall Meath and musician Nicholas Sanborn.

The duo’s sharp song about cat-calling, “Hey Mami,” is basically impossible not to clap and sing along to.

Now, Sylvan Esso’s friends in the band Landlady have remixed the song. Their version is funky and horn-heavy:

“We play in bands and write songs because of a love for each other, a commitment to making sound together and doing the impossible to make people feel unusual,” said Landlady’s Adam Schatz of the remix, “Sylvan Esso asked me to do a horn arrangement of their song ‘Hey Mami,’ a song they knew I really enjoyed and I dove in head first.”

“It’s easy when talking about electronic music to get wrapped up in the presentation of an idea rather than the idea itself,” said Sylvan Esso of wanting a horn version of “Hey Mami.”

“For us it’s really rewarding when we have the opportunity to show people that these are still just songs, no matter how you play them.”
