Listen: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ new song “American Dream Plan B”

Tom Petty previously said that his upcoming 13th studio album with The Heartbreakers, entitled Hypnotic Eye, will be “a straight hard-rockin’ record, from beginning to end.” Judging by the album’s first track, “American Dream Plan B”, Petty and Co. are set to make good on that promise.

Heavy guitar stomps over a straightforward beat, weighty but resilient like the song’s namesake. On the verses, Petty applies a slight snarl to his nasal delivery, with subtle hints of that accent he used on “Breakdown”. The legend sings from the perspective of a younger person facing more modern American challenges, someone who knows “My success is anybody’s guess/but like a fool I’m betting on happiness.”

Hypnotic Eye is due out July 29th through Reprise Records. Consult the Hypnotic Eye album art above, and find the tracklist below.

Interpol’s new album, El Pintor, to be released in September

interpol-el-pintor

Interpol’s new album entitled ‘El Pintor’ (The Painter) will be released on September 9th. The 10-track effort marks the band’s first release since 2010′s Interpol.

If it’s too early in the morning for you to put two and two together, El Pintor is not only Spanish for “the painter”, but it’s also an anagram of Interpol. How clever.

The band wrote and recorded the bulk of the album in New York City, hitting Electric Lady Studios and Atomic Sound. They finished mixing earlier this year while touring the UK. James Brown (Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys) served as engineer, while Alan Moulder was charged with mixing.

Update: According to Matador Records, the album sees Interpol frontman Paul Banks taking over bass duties for the first time. It also features guest appearances from The Secret Machines’ Brandon Curtis, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Beck, Air), and Rob Moose (Bon Iver).

Interpol has shared footage of the recording sessions:

Album Stream – The Orwells’ ‘Disgraceland’

Chicago’s newest garage rock rebels The Orwells may only just be leaving their teens behind, but they’re already gearing up to release their second LP – with the brilliantly tongue-in-cheek title of ‘Disgraceland’ – on June 2.

Famed for their raucous live shows invoking the chaotic hedonism of Atlanta’s favourite tearaways Black Lips, and singer Mario Cuomo’s outlandish stage behaviour and outspoken tongue (the band’s recent comments about Arctic Monkeys’ stage patter being predictable landed them in hot water), the band are leading the charge of punk-spirited young bands putting fun at the fore.

A giant step on from the DIY ethos of 2012 debut ‘Remember When’, ‘Disgraceland’ ups the production values to form something that’s still full of carefree youth, but could also sit happily on the radio. You’ll probably have heard filthy first single ‘Dirty Sheets’ – a squalling mass of prowling riffs and 60s garage strut – while other recent cuts ‘The Righteous One’ and ‘Blood Bubbles’ are, in turn, full of brilliantly snotty swagger and surprisingly epic tendencies. Elsewhere on the record, the quintet up the pop factor on ‘Bathroom Tile Blues’, while old favourite ‘Who Needs You’ is still as much of a middle finger to the man as ever.

‘Disgraceland’ is due for release on Canvasback/ Atlantic next Monday, but for now you can stream the whole thing exclusively below. Let us know what you think in the comments section.

Pearl Jam’s U.S. Tour Dates

Pearl Jam have announced a 12-city October U.S. tour, following a summer trek to Europe, that includes their appearance at Austin City Limits Music Festival. Tickets for the shows go on sale May 30th.

Last year, the group put out their 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt, which frontman Eddie Vedder kvelled about in an interview with Rolling Stone. “I say this in the least-competitive way possible, but we’re trying to make not just the best Pearl Jam record, but just the best record,” the singer said. “It’s about getting to the next level of communication, or just trying to crack a code into some higher plane of playing music.”

Outside of the world of Pearl Jam, the group’s guitarist Mike McCready wrote an article for Rolling Stone about how Kiss had inspired him growing up, as the makeup-faced hard rockers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Moreover, he revealed that he wasn’t the only member of his band to garner inspiration from the group. “Pearl Jam sit down and have conversations about Kiss all the time on tour,” he wrote. “My band used to do ‘C’Mon and Love Me.’ Matt Cameron played in a Kiss tribute band when he was 14. They got so big around San Diego that they got a cease-and-desist order from Casablanca Records. Jeff Ament used to play ‘She’ in his band Deranged Diction. There’s a Kiss through-line to a lot of the music that came out of Seattle, and it hasn’t been talked about a lot.”
