What the Charlie Hebdo Execution Video Really Shows

charlie-attentat-400x266I am well aware that I’m stepping into a hornet’s nest by posting this video, which is going viral. Those who wish to silence all debate have an easy card to play here, accusing me of buying into a conspiracy theory. There’s only one problem: unlike the video-maker, I have few conclusions to draw about what the significance of this video is in relation to the official story. That is not why I am posting it.

But it does, at least to my mind and obviously a lot of other people’s, judging by how quickly it’s spreading, suggest that Ahmed Merabet, the policeman outside the Charlie Hebdo office, was not shot in the head, as all the media have been stating.

That said, it does not prove much more. It doesn’t prove that Merabet did not die at the scene. Maybe he bled to death there on the pavement from his earlier wound. It certainly doesn’t prove that the Kouachi brothers were not the gunmen or that the one who fired missed on purpose. Maybe he just missed.

Nor does the video’s removal from most websites prove that there is some sort of massive cover-up going on. Ideas of good taste, especially in the immediate aftermath of a massacre close to home (ie here in the West), can lead to a media consensus that a video is too upsetting. That can occur even if it does not show blood and gore, simply because of what it implies. Herd instinct in these instances is very strong.

But the unedited video clip does leave a sour taste: because unless someone has a good rebuttal, it does indeed seem impossible that an AK-47 bullet fired from close range would not have done something pretty dramatic to that policeman’s head. And if the video is real – and there doesn’t seem much doubt that it is – it clearly shows nothing significant happened to his head either as or after the bullet was fired.

So what points am I making?

The first one is more tentative. It seems – though I suppose there could be an explanation I have overlooked – that the authorities have lied about the cause of the policeman’s death. That could be for several probably unknowable reasons, including that his being executed was a simpler, neater story than that he bled to death on the pavement because of official incompetence (there already seems to have been plenty of that in this case).

The second point is even more troubling. Most of the senior editors of our mainstream media have watched the unedited video just as you now have. And either not one of them saw the problem raised here – that the video does not show what it is supposed to show – or some of them did see it but did not care. Either way, they simply regurgitated an official story that does not seem to fit the available evidence.

That is a cause for deep concern. Because if the media are acting as a collective mouth-piece for a dubious official narrative on this occasion, on a story of huge significance that one assumes is being carefully scrutinised for news angles, what are they doing the rest of the time?

The lesson is that we as news consumers must create our own critical distance from the “news” because we cannot trust our corporate media to do that work for us. They are far too close to power. In fact, they are power.

Official narratives are inherently suspect because power always looks out for itself. This appears to be a good example – whether what it shows is relatively harmless or sinister – to remind us of that fact.

Charlie Hebdo Shootings – Censored Video

Published on Jan 10, 2015

This is footage of the Charlie Hebdo shootings which has been restricted or taken down from a number of websites. As you will see it contains no blood, gore or graphic violence. It does however punch a major hole in the official story.

Transcript & sources: http://stormcloudsgathering.com/charl…

I’m still trying to imagine a plausible explanation for the video. I’m no ballistics expert, so I’m firmly in the land of conjecture. But I wonder whether, if the bullet hit the pavement close to Merabet’s head, it might have been possible for bullet fragments to hit him, possibly killing him.

This possibility (assuming it is one) does not invalidate the point of my post. If it was indeed the case, certainly no media outlet has suggested that the gunman missed Merabet and that he died from the exploding fragments.

This isn’t meant to raise technical, or gruesome, details of the case. It is to suggest that western journalists do not report fearlessly and independently when they examine events being narrated by official sources. They mostly regurgitate information on trust, because they trust the authorities to be telling the truth. They do the same when the acts of official enemies are being examined – they again turn to official sources on their side. In short, most journalists have no critical distance from the events they are reporting on our behalf.

That leaves us, ordinary news consumers, in a position of either blindly trusting our own officials too or trying to work things out for ourselves. You would hope that the issues raised by this video get aired by journalists as part of establishing greater trust in our profession and proof of our independence. Instead, I expect it will simply be consigned the “conspiracy theory” bin.

Motives behind the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris

Published on Jan 8, 2015

Yesterday morning, three masked gunmen stormed the headquarters of the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. The attackers forced one of the cartoonists to open the door with a security code. And then headed straight towards the paper’s editor, Stephane Charbonnier better known as Charb, who was in an editorial staff meeting. In the encounter the gunmen killed Charb, his bodyguard and many more journalists. Minutes later the attackers left the building and shot a police officer and escaped with a vehicle. Ten journalists and two police officers were killed, it was the deadliest terrorist attack on French soil in fifty years.

Representatives of ISIS quickly praised the massacre as an act of revenge for the magazine’s insults against Islam and the Prophet Muhammed. But a closer look at the long term implications reveals a more complex and a profound motive that is meant to shake Europe and radicalize European Muslims.

The Charlie Hedbo Rally: Media Distortions and Hypocrisy in Paris

Region:

paris-march-jan11-2a-955px-400x209Sunday headlines said huge crowds massed in Paris. Protected by “unparalleled” security, according to AP.

Including thousands of police and military forces. Along the two-mile Boulevarde Voltaire route marchers took.

An “unprecedented tribute,” said Reuters. Showing “unity and defiance,” claimed The New York Times.

“(S)olidarity following three days of terrorist attacks that badly shook the nation,” said the Washington Post.

“Paris displays defiance with huge rally,” headlined the Wall Street Journal.

“Paris urged to ‘come in numbers’ to defy Islamist terror,” said the Los Angeles Times.

London’s Guardian said one million “expected for anti-terror rally.”

Al Jazeera headlined “Huge crowds attend Paris solidarity rally.”

BBC said “Vast Paris rally…Unity after 17 people were killed during three days of deadly attacks.”

Le Figaro said “(A)ll major (Parisian) streets are saturated” leading to “place de la Republique.”

Le Monde headlined “(H)uge crowds marched against terrorism in Paris and France.”

An invitation circulating on social media said: “Indignation. Resistance. Solidarity, I am Charlie.”

Organizers said Sunday’s rally expressed solidarity for “freedom of the press. (F)reedom of speech. France won’t be cowed by terrorists.”

Around 40 world leaders attended. Reuters said 44. Some reports said 50. Including around two dozen Western European ones.

Current French President Francois Hollande and former president Nicolas Sarkozy were accompanied by Germany’s Angela Merkel. Britain’s David Cameron.

Spain’s Mariano Rajoy. Italy’s Matteo Renzi. EU Council President Donald Tusk. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Junker.

Other European leaders. Eight African ones. Outgoing US Attorney General Eric Holder and US ambassador to France Jane Hartley representing America.

Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney represents Canada. Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman represent Israel.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov represents Russia. Putschist/oligarch president Petro Poroshenko represents Ukraine.

NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoletenberg is there. So is European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon came. Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas arrived.

One source lists the following participating countries in alphabetical order:

Albania. Algeria. Austria. Belgium. Benin. Britain. Bulgaria. Canada. Croatia. Czech Republic. Denmark. Gabon. Egypt. Finland. Georgia.

Germany. Greece. Hungary. Israel. Jordan. Latvia. Niger. Mali. Palestine. Poland. Portugal. Romania. Russia. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland.

The Netherlands. Tunisia. Turkey. United Arab Emirates. Ukraine. United States.

To encourage turnout, public transport into and throughout Paris is free on Sunday. International train operator Thalys cut fares to the capital.

Right-wing National Front leader Marine Le Pen urged her supporters to rally outside Paris. In retaliation for exclusion from event preparations.

French officials condemned Paris killings. The way US ones denounced the deaths of New York police officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

“(M)ourning the loss of these brave souls,” said New York Governor  Andrew Cuomo. Vice President Biden joined him on site. Obama sent a message of condolence.

In response to last week’s Paris killings, he ludicrously called them “an attack on journalists…on our free press … underscor(ing) the degree to which these terrorists fear freedom.”

“(O)ur thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who’ve been lost in France, and with the people of Paris and the people of France.”

Obama’s comments are rife with hypocrisy. Other Western leaders voice similar Big Lies.

Israel’s Netanyayu is a serial liar. US-led NATO leaders and Netanyahu are war criminals multiple times over.

Who mourns for millions US-dominated NATO victims? Murdered in cold blood? Noncombatant men, women and children.

Lost Palestinian lives. Slaughtered by Israel. Others ruthlessly persecuted.

What about on average one defenseless Black youth per day killed by US cops?

Who holds solidarity marches for justice? Mourns victims. Supports surviving family members. Rallies for justice.

Demands state-sponsored terrorism end. The madness of one imperial war after another. Senseless slaughter and destruction.

Trillions of dollars down a black hole of war profiteering, waste, fraud and abuse. Wars are dirty. Merciless. Unjust. Lawless.

Good ones don’t exist. Poet Robert Burns said “(m)ore inhumanity has been done by man himself than any other of nature’s causes.”

“Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn.” Out of sight and mind worldwide. Every day of the year.

Who notices their suffering? Who explains their grief? Who televises it?

What world leaders express solidarity? Which ones demand no more wars?

George Santanyana said “(o)nly the dead have seen the end of war.”

Howard Zinn denounced the myth of good wars. Preventing peace. Perpetuating violence.

WW II was worst of all. WW III if waged will be the war to end all future ones. Today’s destructive WMDs can end life on earth.

Zinn said “(w)e need to decide that we will not go to war, whatever reason is conjured up by the politicians or the media, because war in our time is always indiscriminate, a war against innocents, a war against children.”

No “flag (is) large enough to cover the shame of killing (millions) of innocent people.”

Over a century ago, Mark Twain expressed outrage about America slaughtering Filipinos. Things were like today on a smaller scale.

Imperial conquest is vicious. Having nothing to do with liberating oppressed people.

Or championing democracy. Free expression. A free press. Freedom of assembly, association, and religion.

The right of people to hold ruling authorities accountable. Receive redress for grievances. Institute governance of, by and for everyone. Equitably and just. A new dawn.

Mark Twain said “I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines.”

“We have gone there to conquer, not to redeem.”

“And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land.”

“We have pacified some thousands of the islanders and buried them; destroyed their fields, burned their villages, turned their widows and orphans out-of-doors, (and) subjugated the remaining ten million by Benevolent Assimilation, which is the pious new name of the musket…”

He proposed a new American flag. Envisioning one “with the white stripes painted black and the stars replaced by the skull and cross-bones.”

Appalled that General Jacob Smith ordered his troops to “kill and burn.”

“(T)his is no time to take prisoners,” he said. (T)he more you kill and burn, the better.”

“Kill all above the age of ten. (T)urn (the Philippines into) a howling wilderness.”

Wars are lunatic acts. Resolving nothing. Preventing any hope for peace. Begetting endless violence.

Waging perpetual wars reflects official US policy. Crimes of war, against humanity and genocide follow. Millions of corpses attest to America’s barbarity.

Paris mourns 17 lost lives. Avoidable tragedies. Victims deserving to live. Get equitable and just treatment.

Who mourns for the daily victims of US-dominated NATO ruthlessness? From ongoing imperial direct and proxy wars.

Endless ones. Countless millions affected worldwide. The dead, dying, mutilated, suffering, deprived and exploited.

Who rallies on their behalf? Who demands lawless imperial slaughter end? Who accepts nothing less than peace, equity and justice?

Who puts their bodies on the line for them? Who resists growing tyranny in Western societies?

Who fights for democratic freedoms fast slipping away? Who demands responsible governments replace ill-serving ones? Who goes all out for what matters most?

Public rallies achieve nothing. Nor high-minded rhetoric. Committed grassroots activism for change alone works.

Sustained for the long haul. No matter the cost. The alternative is continued subjugation. Ruler/serf societies. Ones unfit to live in.

The kind Washington intends instituting worldwide. Unless mass public outrage stops it once and for all.

Rally for right over wrong daily. Support what matters most. Forget about Je suis Charlie.

Propaganda rubbish shoved down our throats. By Western oppressors vital to oppose. The fundamental issue of our time!

Paris Shooters Just Returned from NATO’s Proxy War in Syria

Tony Cartalucci

Region: Europe, Middle East & North Africa
Theme: 9/11 & ‘War on Terrorism’, Intelligence, US NATO War Agenda
In-depth Report: SYRIA: NATO’S NEXT WAR?

Shooters were radicalized in Europe, sent to Syria, returned, have been previously arrested by Western security agencies for terrorism and long on the watch-list of French and other Western intelligence agencies. Yet “somehow” they still managed to execute a highly organized attack in the heart of Europe.  In an all too familiar pattern and as predicted, the shooters involved in the attack in Paris Wednesday, January 7, 2015, were French citizens, radicalized in Europe and exported to Syria to fight in NATO’s proxy war against the government in Damascus, then brought back where they have now carried out a domestic attack. Additionally, as have been many other domestic attacks, the suspects were long under the watch of Western intelligence services, with at least one suspect having already been arrested on terrorism charges.

USA Today would report in an article titled,Manhunt continues for two French terror suspects, that:

The suspects are two brothers — Said, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, both French nationals — and Hamyd Mourad, 18, whose nationality wasn’t known, a Paris police official told the Associated Press. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

USA Today would also report (emphasis added):

The brothers were born in Paris of Algerian descent. Cherif was sentenced to three years in prison on terrorism charges in May 2008. Both brothers returned from Syria this summer.

The implications of yet another case of Western-radicalized terrorists, first exported to fight NATO’s proxy war in Syria, then imported and well-known to Western intelligence agencies, being able to carry out a highly organized, well-executed attack, is that the attack itself was sanctioned and engineered by Western intelligence agencies themselves,. This mirrors almost verbatim the type of operations NATO intelligence carried out during the Cold War with similar networks of radicalized militants used both as foreign mercenaries and domestic provocateurs. Toward the end of the Cold War, one of these militant groups was literally Al Qaeda – a proxy mercenary front armed, funded, and employed by the West to this very day.

Additionally, in all likelihood, the brothers who took part in the attack in Paris may have been fighting in Syria with weapons provided to them by the French government itself.  France 24 would report last year in an article titled, “France delivered arms to Syrian rebels, Hollande confirms, that:

President Francois Hollande said on Thursday that France had delivered weapons to rebels battling the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad “a few months ago.”

Deflecting blame for the current attack on “radical Islam” is but a canard obscuring the truth that these terrorists were created intentionally by the West, to fight the West’s enemies abroad, and to intimidate and terrorize their populations at home.

We Must Sidestep the Canards

As with any false flag attack engineered by a government for the purpose of manipulating public perception and pushing through otherwise unjustifiable policy both foreign and domestic, a series of canards are erected to distract the public from the true nature of the attack.

In the recent attack in Paris, France, the canards of “free speech,” “condemning radical Islam,” “tolerance,” and “extremism” have all taken center stage, displacing the fact that the terrorists who carried out the attack were long on the leash not of “Islamic extremists” but Western intelligence agencies, fighting in a Western proxy war, as a member of a well-funded, armed, and trained mercenary force that has, on record since as early as 2007, been an essential component of Western foreign policy.

Indeed, Al Qaeda and its various rebrandings are not the creation of “Islamic extremism,” but rather Western foreign policy using “extremism” as part of indoctrinating the rank and file, but directed by and solely for the purpose of serving an entirely Western agenda.

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda

To this day, the US, its NATO partners including Turkey, and regional partners including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are arming, funding, harboring, training, and otherwise perpetuating these “Islamic extremists” within and along both Syria and now Iraq’s borders.
In reality, without Western backing, “laundered” through the Persian Gulf autocracies and manifesting themselves in a global network of mosques jointly run by Persian Gulf and Western intelligence agencies, there would be no “Islamic extremism” to speak of. To focus on “extremism” as a cause, rather than as a means used by the true perpetrators of this global-spanning campaign of Western-sanctioned terrorism, is not only to perpetuate such canards, but to invite the perpetuation of this very terrorism we are shocked and horrified by.

West Apparently Maintaining Domestic Radicalization/Recruitment Centers

The recent Sydney cafe hostage crisis featuring an Iranian dissident granted Australian asylum and featured in anti-Iranian propaganda, exposed a vast network of radicalization and recruitment run in the Australian city of Sydney, used to organize support and fighters to be sent to the West’s proxy war in Syria. The network included many notorious individuals, well known to Australian law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and many of whom had traveled to Syria, taken part in fighting alongside known terrorist organizations, and were allowed to return and continue their political activities in Australia.

The Daily Mail’s article,Why did police ask former terror suspect for an ISIS flag?would state:

Counter terrorism police have contacted Sydney man and one time terror accused Zaky Mallah and asked him for an ISIS flag.

Just over four hours into the Martin Place siege, officers the NSW Police Joint Counter Terrorism Team and asked him if he could give them an ISIS flag.

Zaky Mallah, 30, from Westmead in western Sydney offered the Counter Terrorist police the flag that hangs on the wall of his apartment, the moderate Islamic Front flag, but ‘they weren’t interested’.

The article would also state:

Two years ago Mr Mallah travelled to Syria and lived with the FSA rebels engaged in the bloody civil war against Muslim hardliner President Bashar el Assad ‘before it got crazy over there’. After returning home, he encouraged young people to go to Syria and engage in jihad to experience the freedom fight taken up against El Assad…

As in Australia, France apparently also has a stable of former terrorists who had traveled to Syria and returned, all while on their watch lists – and in Australia at least – some of these terrorists are literally on security agency speed dials and are clearly a part of a network the intelligence community both monitors and in fact, maintains.

Such networks have turned out thousands of recruits to fight in NATO’s war in Syria. The BBC would report in an article titled,Islamic State crisis: ’3,000 European jihadists join fight’,” that:

The number of Europeans joining Islamist fighters in Syria and Iraq has risen to more than 3,000, the EU’s anti-terrorism chief has told the BBC.

Gilles de Kerchove also warned that Western air strikes would increase the risk of retaliatory attacks in Europe.

How exactly is the public expected to believe that such a vast number of terrorists can migrate overseas to fight alongside terrorist forces the West is currently, allegedly, fighting, without the West being able to stem such a tide? Clearly, just as arming Al Qaeda in Syria was done intentionally, so to have the floodgates been open, allowing European terrorists to both join NATO’s proxy war in Syria, and to return home and join NATO’s growing war against its own people.

Operation Gladio on Steroids

Such networks don’t just mirror NATO’s “stay behind networks” formed during the Cold War, supposedly created to activate in the wake of a full-scale Soviet invasion of Western Europe, but instead used as a covert front of political and terroristic provocation – such networks today are a continuation of NATO’s secret armies.

NATO’s Secret Armies (2009)

NATO’s provocateurs used during the Cold War were a mixture of nationalists, anti-communists, former Nazi SS officers, and extremists of every stripe. Their particular beliefs were, however, ultimately irrelevant since they were used for a singular agenda defined not by these beliefs, but by NATO’s own agenda.

Many of the militants and extremists NATO used were liquidated upon the completion of the many false flag attacks NATO organized at the cost of hundreds of innocent European lives. Likewise, today, many of the gunmen or bombers involved in the long string of suspicious domestic attacks carried out by NATO’s modern “stay behind network” are either killed on sight, or imprisoned and forgotten.

While NATO’s Cold War operations appeared confined to conducting terrorism upon its own people, today’s networks are used to carry out both proxy wars overseas as well as to carry out terrorist attacks at home. The expansive nature of this network and the threat it poses to global peace and stability should be at the center of the Paris attack debate – not the alleged beliefs, religion, or supposed agenda of the attackers who, just like their Cold War counterparts, were nothing more than patsies and pawns amid a much larger and insidious game.

What’s Known About The Suspects In The Paris Shooting

Breaking News From NPR

French authorities are on the hunt today for two brothers: Said and Chérif Kouachi, 34 and 32. Police say those two men are the main suspects in an attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in Paris that left 12 people dead.

Here’s a roundup of what is known about the two men:

— NPR’s Dina Temple-Raston says counterterrorism officials she has talked to have been careful not to link the two men to particular terrorist groups.

— Chérif was known to authorities prior to Wednesday’s attack, because he was convicted on terrorism charges in 2008. He served 18 months for helping to funnel fighters from France to Iraq.

Since Western powers began a war against the Islamic State, governments have expressed worries about their citizens traveling to Syria, becoming radicalized and then carrying out attacks at home.

Dina says authorities aren’t sure yet what happened to Kouachi after his arrest in 2008. It’s unclear whether he has ever traveled to Syria and it’s unclear whether he has developed any links to terrorist groups — including the Islamic State — since 2008.

— Judging by the shot patterns left on a police cruiser yesterday, what is clear is that the two gunmen were very comfortable using high-powered weapons. It’s likely, Dina says, that they received some military training. The question is where.

— Quoting French media, The New York Times paints this early portrait of Cherif:

“Libération, a French newspaper, described Chérif Kouachi as an orphan whose parents were Algerian immigrants. It said he was raised in foster care in Rennes, in western France, and trained as a fitness instructor before moving to Paris, where he lived with his brother Said in the home of a convert to Islam. He held menial jobs, working at times as a pizza delivery man, shop assistant and fishmonger.

“He was first arrested in 2005 in connection with a case centered on Farid Benyettou, a 26-year-old janitor-turned-preacher who gave sermons calling for jihad in Iraq and justifying suicide bombings. Among Mr. Benyettou’s would-be recruits was Chérif Kouachi, then 22, who was detained as he prepared to leave for Syria, the first leg of a trip he hoped would take him to Iraq.”

Bloomberg reports that Chérif was arrested in 2010 for “suspected involvement in plotting the escape of one of the masterminds of bombings and terrorist attacks in 1995 that killed eight people and injured more than 200, according to police reports.”

Citing Le Monde, Bloomberg adds that prosecutors decided to drop the case after holding Chérif for about four months.

— Agence France-Presse and other news agencies reported that authorities found Said’s identification card in the getaway car.

Update at 1:46 p.m. ET. What We Know About Said:

Bernard Cazeneuve, the French Interior Minister, said during a press conference that Said Kouachi did not have a criminal record.

Young shooting suspect no Islamist: schoolmates

He said Said was unemployed and had emerged on the fringes of the investigations.

Update at 9:59 p.m. ET. The Third Suspect:

As we’ve reported, another suspect, identified by French media as 18-year-old Mourad Hamyd, turned himself in to police overnight.

The AFP just moved a video talking to his schoolmates, who said Hamyd was no Islamist. One of them told the wire service that Hamyd was at school at the time of the attack and so could not have been in Paris.

According to NPR, French authorities are still on the hunt for two brothers suspected in an attack against the headquarters of a satirical magazine in Paris that left 12 people dead.

NPR’s Eleanor Beardsley reports that the French capital is on its highest alert level, and 800 soldiers and riot police have been called on to guard the city. Schoolchildren, Eleanor said, are being kept inside for recess.

To add to the tension, there was a shooting on Paris’ southern edge that killed a police officer and wounded a street sweeper. Bernard Cazeneuve, France’s Interior Minister, said those shootings had not been linked to the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Overnight, one of the three suspects, identified by French media as 18-year-old Mourad Hamyd, was reported to have turned himself in.

Overnight, one of the three suspects, identified by French media as 18-year-old Mourad Hamyd, was reported to have turned himself in.

Cazeneuve said nine people had been detained in connection to the attack. The two chief suspects, named as Said and Chérif Kouachi, 34 and 32, remain at large‘Dangerous Moment’ for Europe, as Fear and Resentment GrowJAN. 7, 2015

The precautionary measures are on top of those already in place since Dec. 20, when Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were killed in their patrol car by a lone gunman targeting officers. They were disseminated two days after two other officers were shot and wounded in the Bronx.

For more than two weeks, the department has increased security at precinct houses and ordered a suspension of solo foot patrols.

William J. Bratton, the police commissioner, said earlier on Wednesday that there was no “direct threat” to New York related to the attacks in Paris on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam in the past.

The internal memo drew attention to the victims of the Paris attacks. “Among the dead were two police officers, one of whom was assigned to guard the office after it had been threatened and firebombed by terrorists,” the memo began, before urging vigilance.

“Pay attention to your surroundings, not your cellphone,” it read.

Local officials say mosques were targeted across the country late Wednesday and early today. There were no reports of injuries, and it’s unclear if they are linked to the attack on Charlie Hebdo. But Cazeneuve said the country would not tolerate any attacks on places of worship.

This is a breaking news story. As often happens in situations like these, some information reported early may turn out to be inaccurate. We’ll move quickly to correct the record and we’ll only point to the best information we have at the time.

LED ZEPPELIN’S Jimmy Page answers questions from fans at L’Olympia Theatre, Paris

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin

Answering questions submitted by fans, Jimmy Page was grilled onstage at L’Olympia Theatre, Paris, the source of the 1969 live recordings included as bonus material on the new Led Zeppelin I.

Reviewing the live tracks, Page noted that “The whole energy of the audience is just incredible, and it’s driving us on,” before adding that “it was a bit of a communion”.

The event was live-streamed from L’Olympia. But if you missed it, for whatever reason, adjust your disappointment with this taste of front row action from Page’s Q&A…

Page premiered material from the 1969 live show – including versions of Good Times Bad Times/Communication Breakdown and You Shook Me – plus bonus tracks from the Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin III remasters, including rough mixes of Heartbreaker, Gallows Pole, Since I’ve Been Loving You and The Immigrant Song.

Reinventing The Music Video, One Street Corner At A Time

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The sun has just set over a busy, dimly lit street in Paris when musicians suddenly start spilling out of a corner bar, tuning their instruments. Colin Solal Cardo follows close behind, holding a video camera.

“We were inside the bar,” Solal Cardo says, “and we got kicked out. So now we’re in front of the bar in the streets, and we’re going to perform right in the streets. The night is falling in Paris, and cars everywhere, and it’s total chaos, but I think it’s going to be great.” He addresses the gathered musicians: “Okay, guys, let’s be sure we have no one in the frame that is not a band member. Thank you.”

The group is with a French website often credited with helping to reinvent the music video with what it calls “Take Away Shows.” They’re original, informal videos of musicians from across the U.S. and Europe, playing live in unlikely places.

The band in this Take Away Show is the American group San Fermin, currently on tour with its debut album. Solal Cardo says this is a typical Blogothéque shoot: filmed in one take, with no overall plan, no lighting crew or fancy set-ups. The philosophy of the website is to put bands in unusual environments — often without their usual instruments — and see what happens. For example, San Fermin’s frontman, Ellis Ludwig-Leone, has been handed a small toy piano in lieu of his full-size keyboard.

“I mean, what’s exciting about it is, like, you write these songs, you practice as a band, then you just do the same thing over and over and over again,” Ludwig-Leone says. “And then for something like this, you’re actually going to be called on as a musician to make adjustments in time. It’s refreshing in a way. I haven’t had to think this actively and creatively about our live set-up since we started touring.”

Christophe Abric, a one-time music journalist who started La Blogothéque a decade ago, began filming bands in 2006.

“The purpose is to get them out their comfort zone,” Abric says, “to tell them, ‘Okay, you’ve done a record. You’ve got a way of playing your music live. But why don’t we try to find a way to be the most sincere we can be?'”

All of the videos are archived online; the catalog includes big-name groups such as R.E.M. and Wilco, Abric says one enduring draw of the Take Away Shows is not just watching musicians play live, but watching them play live in Paris.

“There is something amazing in the strength of Paris,” Abric says. “We want the city to be there in the sound. If you have kids shouting, if you have birds all around, it’s part of the whole environment, and you have to have that.”

At the San Fermin shoot, someone passing by starts to sing and a car horn blares. A question arises: How do you actually record music in the middle of all this noise?

To capture every note and voice, La Blogothéque’s sound engineer, Francois Clos, fits small, wireless mics onto every band member — each recorded on a separate track and mixed afterwards. Clos says that, even though video is a visual medium, sound quality is the most important element here.

“The challenge is always to know how many mics you need, where you put the mic to preserve a sound — which sound quite real but which is post-produced and not real at all, you know. But outside, anything can happen,” Clos says. “So you shouldn’t record musicians if you don’t think about how to record them. They’re here to show that they can play music.”

Indeed, each musician in the finished San Fermin video can be heard loud and clear — even as singer Rae Cassidy walks through traffic and the camera twists and turns around the band.

Today, there are scores of websites offering impromptu performance videos (including NPR Music’s own and series). And that, Abric says, has created a problem: Musicians now show up knowing exactly what to expect.

“The landscape totally, completely changed since we began the Take Away Shows,” Abric says. “When we started, everything we were doing was experimental and new, and now we’re in a completely different world where anybody can do a beautiful video. Suddenly, when we’re filming a band, we’re the sixth person of the day filming that band. And so you’re like, ‘Oh my god. We’re not something new.’

“With Blogothéque now,” he adds, “we’re one of the requirements in a promo tour of a band. That’s not what we wanted to be. We made the Take Away Shows to break the routine, and one day we became the routine.”

The challenge now, Abric says, is to best themselves at their own game. Earlier this year, his team made a video of the French rock band Phoenix outside the Palace of Versailles — filmed with a flying drone. And La Blogothéque is venturing outside Paris, filming performers everywhere from the North African desert to the muddy waters of the Ohio river . Look around and you just might see a band walking down your street, with a camera crew following close behind.
