The National to start working on new album this fall

While the National are still on tour supporting their 2013 album Trouble Will Find Me, the band is setting their sights on making a new record. In an interview with Gigwise, frontman Matt Berninger revealed the band’s plans to get together in October to begin work on their seventh studio album, CoS informed.

For the first time, the band plans to to write together in the same room, as Berninger explained, “We always work on little things and email back and forth. We have no idea whether it’s going to work or not, but that’s as far as we’ve got with the new record: trying to work out a plan and a different approach.”

“That might fail miserably,” Berninger added, “but then we’ll try it a different way.”

Below, watch the band perform “Graceless” on Saturday Night Live earlier this year.

The National offer baritone and brooding textures on their rendition of Perfume Genius’ “Learning”. The cover acts as the B-side to “I Need My Girl”, the latest single from Trouble Will Find Me.

While the band’s take mostly stays true to the moving, piano-led original — a highlight off Perfume Genius’ 2010 album of the same name — Matt Berninger’s deep bellow seems to add another dimension of previously unexplored sentimentality. It’s dark, heavy, and all the resonant. Check it out below.

The National ‘Lean’ The Hunger Games Catching Fire Soundtrack

627

Brooklyn band The National

The National sound restrained and somber on “Lean,” their new contribution to the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. The band builds a moody texture of acoustic guitars and, later, violin embellishments as frontman Matt Berninger portends doom with lyrics like, “Everybody needs a prayer and needs a friend/Everybody knows the world’s about to end.” Throughout the song’s four minutes, though, the band barely break a sweat, keeping their cool even as Berninger coos “Dying is easy” in the chorus.

Listen to The National’s beautiful performance for KCRW

The National - Photo KCRW

The National – Photo KCRW

Following their performance at Outside Lands and last night’s appearance on Kimmel, The National stopped by KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic to play a special, stripped-down set. The band performed what they called “chilled out versions” of Trouble Will Find Me tracks like “I Should Live In Salt”, “This Is the Last Time”, and “Fireproof”, due to the absence of drummer Bryan Devendorf, who sat out the session in order to rest his injured back. Listen to the entire 45-minute program here.

The National may be a New York institution, but the band was in Hollywood last night as guests of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. As they continue to support their second straight CoS Top Star-earning record in Trouble Will Find Me, Matt Berninger and his brotherly bandmates performed “Graceless” and “This is the Last Time”. Watch the replay below.

In related news, The National are reportedly hard at work on a star-studded Grateful Dead tribute album with Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, The Walkmen, Kurt Vile & The Violators, and others. Can’t wait.
