Wampire announces new album, ‘Bazaar’, stream 3 tracks

Despite their insanely silly band name, Portland’s Wampire managed to sink their teeth into many a people’s hearts last year (including ours). That was thanks in part to their debut album, Curiosity, which saw the duo of Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps deftly blend playful psychedelia with bits of ’70s rock and synth-pop for a joyful yet nuanced sound. They parlayed the album into tours with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Smith Westerns, plus a bevy of festival dates the world over.

Now, Tinder and Phipps are looking toward the future, recruiting a full band for the release of Wampire’s sophomore album, Bazaar, due out October 7th via Polyvinyl. For the nine-track effort, Wampire once again tapped UMO’s Jacob Portrait to serve as producer, spending time recently at The Museum studio in Brooklyn. In a press release, Phipps called his state of mind during the album’s recording sessions as that of a “Kafka-esque insomniac musical novelist”.”

Watch New Midlake Video, By Hollywood Indie Fan Jason Lee

A tranquil Jog On a  tree-lined road begins Midlake’s newest promo video, a collaboration between director Eric Noren and actor Jason Lee of Almost Famous and My Name Is Earl fame.

Cut from Lee and Noren’s upcoming documentary about the group in situ in their home town of Denton, Texas, it balances the gritty and romantic, the cornmills with the quaint legobrick Courthouse-on-the-Square. It’s less of a rock promo; more a meditation on an American small town in collision with the new millennium.

It’s also doubles as a pretty nifty ad for Denton’s Portlandia-esque Paschall Bar, in which the group have a sizeable stake.

It’s also a timely reminder of Midlake’s excellent recent album, Antiphon, and the group’s remarkable emergence from the potential disaster of singer and main songwriter Tim Smith’s departure in November 2012.

The documentary – entitled Midlake:  Live in Denton, TX – will premiere in the UK at Glastonbury Festival on Thursday, June 26, 14.00 at the William’s Green venue. Midlake will be performing live at Glastonbury as part of their summer tour of Europe/UK/Australia/North America.

Pearl Jam have announced a 12-city October U.S. tour, following a summer trek to Europe, that includes their appearance at Austin City Limits Music Festival. Tickets for the shows go on sale May 30th.

Last year, the group put out their 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt, which frontman Eddie Vedder kvelled about in an interview with Rolling Stone. “I say this in the least-competitive way possible, but we’re trying to make not just the best Pearl Jam record, but just the best record,” the singer said. “It’s about getting to the next level of communication, or just trying to crack a code into some higher plane of playing music.”

Outside of the world of Pearl Jam, the group’s guitarist Mike McCready wrote an article for Rolling Stone about how Kiss had inspired him growing up, as the makeup-faced hard rockers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Moreover, he revealed that he wasn’t the only member of his band to garner inspiration from the group. “Pearl Jam sit down and have conversations about Kiss all the time on tour,” he wrote. “My band used to do ‘C’Mon and Love Me.’ Matt Cameron played in a Kiss tribute band when he was 14. They got so big around San Diego that they got a cease-and-desist order from Casablanca Records. Jeff Ament used to play ‘She’ in his band Deranged Diction. There’s a Kiss through-line to a lot of the music that came out of Seattle, and it hasn’t been talked about a lot.”
